Where Acadians Settled:
Opelousas, Louisiana
Bienvenue aux Opelousas! This city, once the capital of Louisiana during the Civil War, takes its name from the Appalousa tribe of American Indians who lived in the area many years before the first Spanish and French pioneers arrived. Opelousas is the Yam capital of the world. Cajun chef Paul Prudhomme is from Opelousas. Opelousas is also considered by some to be the birthplace of Zydeco music, a lively form of music. The tourism office in Opelousas is designed like an original Cajun cabin. Historic places of interest: The Jim Bowie Museum on Highway 190 East, the Jim Bowie home on south end of Union Street, the Jim Bowie Oak on Landry Street, and Toby's Little Lodge (features live Cajun music, dancing and a live French radio show). This is a photograph of Opelousas native, Jim Bowie. For tourism information about Opelousas, call (318) 942-2683.
