Where Acadians Settled:

Abbeville, Louisiana

Acadians settled in this area, along with Spanish settlers and French immigrants that were here. The first settlers began farming as quickly as possible. The fished, hunted, and trapped to supplement their farming efforts.

Abbeville is named for a Catholic priest, Father Antoine Désiré Mégret, who left his church in Lafayette to build a new one here.

Vermilion parish is a beautiful area. The parish is made up of prairies and moss-covered woodlands. Bayous and "coulées" wind through the parish, ending up at the Gulf of Mexico. The names of these waterways reflect the French heritage of the Acadians, including Bayou Vermilion, Bayou Tigre, Bayou Isle de Canne, and Coulée de Noix.
