The French government's participation in the teaching of French in education in Louisiana's public schools started with the creation of CODOFIL by the state legislature in 1968.  The “Mandatory Program” recommended that all students in 4 and 5 grades should at least learn a second language for 30 minutes every day and 50 minutes each day from grade 6 to 8.

Today, 42 out of 68 parishes offer a French as a Second Language (or FSL- in French: FLE) program. With a total of 1355 public schools, 317 provide a FSL program.  The total number of students in FSL in the education system (K-12) of Louisiana is 70,000.  The number of teachers in this program is 431,  and  240 of them are from countries such as Canada, Belgium, France, Maghreb countries, Africa, etc….. In 2004, the number of teachers from France was 85.
